Shirley Elaine Parr, age 83 years, a resident of Cypress, Illinois, passed away Wednesday morning, June 17, 2020, at 2:20 AM at Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis.
Shirley was born February 24, 1937 in Metropolis, Illinois. She was the daughter of Isaac Newton Crowe and Madge (Mathis) Crowe.
On April 15, 1954, Shirley was united in marriage to James “Ray” Parr at the Cypress Baptist Church. He preceded her in death on August 24, 2005.
Shirley is survived by: her children – Randall Ray Parr and Donald Keith Parr both of Cypress, Joy Elaine (Kevin) Childs of Jonesboro, Arkansas; 3 grandchildren – Jeremy Ray Parr, Amy Lynn (Cantor) Carpenter, and Brandi (Tony) Clements; 6 great grandchildren – Ambria Parr, Joshua Lee Carpenter, Matthew Carpenter, Iris Carpenter, Jailin Clements, and Ashley Clements; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by: a brother and sister-in-law – Vernon and LaRee Johnson; a sister and brother-in-law – Sharon and Gary Robinson; as well as her lifelong best friend, Shirley Ann Turner Bracken.
Shirley attended Vienna High School. For a time, Shirley worked in a clerical position in the Vienna office of Shawnee Development Council. Later, she was employed by the agency as an in-home care giver.
Shirley was also a devoted homemaker She enjoyed spending time with her family and wide circle of friends. Shirley particularly enjoyed listening to gospel and country music. She would often attend the regular music and social gatherings in Ullin. Shirley loved to go out to eat with friends and family. She loved going to the Wok ‘n’ Roll in Anna as well as visiting Triple E BBQ and Honey’s Quick Stop for their fried catfish. Shirley also enjoyed reading the Vienna Times and Monday Pub newspapers.
She was a faithful member of the Cypress Baptist Church, serving as church clerk and secretary for many years. Shirley also enjoyed reading and studying her Bible.
A private service honoring the life of Shirley Parr will be conducted Saturday, June 20, 2020 at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
Interment will be in the Cypress Cemetery.
