Marvin M. Haden

Marvin M. Haden, age 97 years, a resident of rural Vienna, passed away Wednesday evening, October 9, 2019, at 11:55 PM at his home.

Marvin was born January 21, 1922 in Johnson Co. Illinois.  He was the fourth of eight children born to Lloyd and Mattie (Taylor) Haden.

On December 30, 1945, Marvin was united in marriage to Fay Ann Sparenberg in Weldon Springs, Missouri.  She preceded him in death on March 2, 2001. 

Marvin is survived by: his daughter – Donita (Robert) Helman of Lakeville, Minnesota; 2 grandchildren – Jennifer (Michael) Adams of Johnston, Iowa and Jon (Stephanie) Helman of Tiburon, California; 4 great grandchildren – Taylor and Joshua Adams & Charles and Anna Helman; his companion – Naomi Ruth Redcloud of Vienna; 2 sisters – Betty Willyard of Vienna and Clara Drewes of Ozark; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, Marvin was preceded in death by a sister – Inez Ross and 4 brothers – Raymond, Randall, Donald, and Earl Gene Haden.

Marvin attended the Johnson County Public Schools.  He joined the U.S. Army on October 3, 1942 and served during the second world war in Naples-Foggis, Rome-Arno, the Rhineland, and Central Europe as a truck driver connected to the 701st engineer petroleum distribution company.  He was honorably discharged on October 18, 1945 with the rank of Tec. 5.  In recent years, Marvin was honored to be able to participate in a veteran’s honor flight to our nation’s capital.

Marvin had a deep love and appreciation for the land and was a lifelong farmer.  He had raised livestock and grain through the years. Marvin is remembered for his strong work ethic and character. He remarked that he was truly blessed to be able to retire at the age of 50 and return to Southern Illinois to pursue his love of farming on his native soil.  He never thought of farming as work but rather as pleasure.

Marvin was an avid hunter and fisherman.  He also enjoyed country dancing.  He met Naomi at a dance and they enjoyed going out 3 nights a week to dance for many years.

A service honoring the life of Marvin M. Haden will be conducted Monday, October 14, 2019, at 11 AM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.  Pastor Rocio Reyes Williams will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Taylor Cemetery, north of Vienna.

Visitation will be held Monday morning, October 14, 2019, from 10 AM – 11 AM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
