Kay was born August 3, 1950 in Belknap, Illinois. She was the second of four children born to Ardell Jack Hastings and Alice Elizabeth (Davault) Hastings.
On December 9, 1990, Kay was united in marriage to James “Mike” Helms in Bethany, Illinois. He survives.
Other survivors include: 2 children – Katrina Joyce (Russell) Isley of Broughton and John Michael (Laura) Helms of Crab Orchard; 8 grandchildren – Cody (Kaeleigh) Ralph, Caton Ralph, Collin (Makala) Ralph, James Colby Brown, Christopher Brown, Kaylie Helms, Lucas Helms, and Hunter Helms; 3 great grandchildren – Aiden, Jackson, and Syrus; 3 brothers – Jackie (Margaret) Hastings, Jr. of Joppa, Kenneth (Janet) Hastings of Metropolis, and Ronnie (Robyn) Hastings of Goreville; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents.
Kay was a 1968 graduate of Vienna High School. She earned an Associate Degree in Science at Shawnee Community College. Kay had been employed throughout her working career as an administrative assistant.
Kay enjoyed gardening, homemaking, fishing, and spending time with her grandchildren. Kay was a cancer survivor. She battled and won her fight against breast cancer, receiving her final treatment in 1999. In April of this year, when she was diagnosed with lung cancer, she again showed her determination by staying strong and fighting as hard as she could against this terrible disease.
A service honoring the life of Joyce Kay Helms will be conducted Wednesday morning, November 28, 2018, at 10 AM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Burial will be in the West Eden Cemetery near Cypress.
Visitation will be held Tuesday evening, November 27, 2018, from 5 PM – 8 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
