Henry P. Schnaare

Henry P. Schnaare, 100, of Karnak passed away at 8:59 a.m. Monday, September 24, 2018 at the Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis 

Henry was born February 9, 1918 on a farm near Karnak, son of Charles and Margaret Wiesenborn Schnaare. Henry walked one and a half miles to a one-room grade school, Forest View. He rode the white steamer to Karnak High School until the state built route 169 then it was either walk or ride a horse. He graduated 1936. Henry entered the Navy in 1945, took basic training at the Great Lakes Navy Training Center then was sent to Shoemaker, California He served in an advanced Air Pack Unit in the South Pacific, he served in Pearl Harbor, Marshall and Marianna Islands of Kwajalein, Eniwetok and Majuro. He was sent to Guam and then discharged on July 3, 1946. Henry went back home and helped his father farm and continued farming until retirement. Henry has held various offices in St. Luke Lutheran Church in Olmsted since he was a lifelong member. He had served on the Shawnee R C & D Board, Shawnee Development Council, 27 years on Pulaski Alexander Soil Conservation District Board and 13 years on Pulaski County Board of Commissioners. He was a life member of the VFW Post 889 in Mounds and a 65 year member of American Legion Post 178 in Villa Ridge. The month of February 2018 was very special and meaningful to Henry as he celebrated his 100th birthday.  Smiles Senior Center in Mounds had a big 100th birthday party for him. Henry received many awards and recognition from various groups. There were even two television stations there and he told them he wasn’t 100 years old. On Sunday February 18th St Luke Lutheran Church in Olmsted hosted another family and friends party for Henry along with a very special Church service. 

Henry is survived by one niece, Margaret Hudgins (Gerald) of Shorewood, Illinois, four great nieces whom called him there Papa, Sarah Armbruster (Ed) of Highland, Illinois, Tamara Cook (Brian) of Joliet, Illinois,  Mary Kasch of Lake Mary, Florida and Amy Wise of Shorewood, Illinois.  Also, surviving are two great great nieces and one great great nephew whom also called him Papa to his great pleasure, Taylor Cook, Jarrett Cook and Samantha (Sammy) Armbruster.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Ella Mann (Leo) and Clara Fisher (Herschel). 

Funeral Services honoring the life of Mr. Henry P. Schnaare will be at 11 am. Friday, September 28, 2018 at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Olmsted. Pastor Paul Donner will be officiating. Interment will follow at the Mound City National Cemetery with Full Military Honors accorded by the Mounds VFW Post # 8891, Villa Ridge American Legion Post # 178 and the United States Navy Burial Detail Team. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5 till 8 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Karnak and Friday morning from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour at St. Luke Lutheran Church.

Pallbearer will be members of the Mounds VFW Post #8891 and Villa Ridge American Legion Post #178.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the charity of your choice or to St. Luke Lutheran Church in Olmsted or Smiles Senior Citizens in Mounds in care of the Pulaski County General Fund.
