On Saturday, August 25th the Vienna-Goreville football team took on Christopher-Zeigler Royalton Bearcats. With a big crowd in attendance for their season opener of the 2018 season, they did not disappoint as they were able to take a 44-12 win over the Bearcats.
The first quarter of the game began with senior Logyn Frassoto scoring an early touchdown, along with junior Aiden Kuhn getting a “pick 6” following right after to give the Eagles a 12-0 lead.
The second quarter started at 9:17 with sophomoreBrendan Dahncke scoring a touchdown and a two-point conversion to give the Eagles a commanding 20-0 lead.
The Bearcats were finally able to get on board with 5:42 left in the second quarter, but failed by inches not able to get a two-point conversion because sophomore Mason Poland stopped the Bearcats at the line.
Senior Danny Smith got in on the offensive action as he ran a 61 yard touchdown, subsequently senior Kyle Vancleve was able to convert the extra two-points making it 28-6 with 4:31 left in the second.
The Eagles were firing on all cylinders, offense was doing superbly and defense was locked down.
The third quarter began with a communication error for the Eagles, as they fumbled, resulting in a easy Bearcat touchdown at 11:43 left, making the score 28-12, Eagles still leading.
The Eagles made up for the minor mistake as they were able to get a touchdown and two-point conversion by Kuhn with 6:45 remaining.
The lead jumped up even larger after Frassoto was able to get a touchdown and a two-point conversion from Smith making it 44-12 with 1:20 left to play in the third quarter.
The Eagles cruise to a easy first game victory, after finishing out the rest of the fourth quarter holding the Bearcats scoreless. The Eagles look to have a stellar season and top their 4-5 record from the previous 2017 season.
The Eagles next game will be on the road at Eldorado on Friday, August 31, at 7 p.m.
