Local music student wins international essay contest

The International Horn Society presented the 50th annual International Horn Symposium at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana from July 30 – August 4, 2018.  Over 500 horn players from across the globe, ranging from high school students to professional players, were in attendance including Emma Wells, a junior at Vienna High School, and student of Jennifer Presar, Instructor of Horn at SIU School of Music in Carbondale.

Earlier in the year, Wells was awarded the Paul Mansur Award by the IHS, an international essay contest for high school horn players.  One of the prizes included a lesson with a world renowned artist chosen by the winner to be given at the symposium.  Wells chose Denise Tryon who has taught extensively, both in the United Stated and internationally, and most recently served as Professor of Horn at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore from 2007-2018 and will be starting a new teaching position at the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music later this month.

Emma is the daughter of John and Marcia Wells of Cypress.
