John P. Morris, age 69 years, a resident of Metropolis and a former resident of Vienna, passed away Friday morning, August 24, 2018, at 2:05 AM at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky.
John was born September 11, 1948 in Carbondale, Illinois. He was the son of George Francis Morris and Eurisa “Lois” (Bryant) Morris.
Survivors include: his children – Jamie Millard of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Crystal (Curtis) Myers of Metropolis, Faith (Cyrus) Elterman of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Johnnie Smith of Michigan; 9 grandchildren – Devon, Ashley, Jamie, Chris, Nick, Creek, Ryah, Brendon, and Braxton; 3 great grandchildren – Kaiden, Saylor, and Brynleigh; a brother – Scott (Gae) Morris of Karnak; a double cousin – Karol Stahl of Simpsonville, South Carolina; along with other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by 2 double cousins – Kim Jakubco and Randy Morris.
John was a 1966 graduate of Vienna High School. He earned an Associate Degree from Shawnee Community College at Ullin.
John was a U.S. Army veteran. He served during the Vietnam era and was stationed in Germany. During his military service, John worked as an electrician in radio communication technology. He was a member of Beggs-Gurley VFW Post # 5222 in Vienna as well as the American Legion.
John was proud to be a carpenter and craftsman. He was also a skilled electrician.
John was of the Christian faith. He had formerly been a member of the Masonic fraternity. In his spare time, John enjoyed staying in contact with family and friends on Facebook.
A service honoring the life of John P. Morris will be conducted Tuesday evening, August 28, 2018, at 6 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor Jeff Van Cleve will officiate.
Military honors will be accorded immediately following the service by members of the Beggs-Gurley VFW Post # 5222 and the Illinois National Guard Burial Honors Detail.
