Howard Ray Powell, age 82 years, a resident of rural Ozark, passed away Sunday evening, July 22, 2018, at 10:44 PM at his home.
Howard Ray was born June 5, 1936 in Ozark. He was the son of Normal and Caroline (Simmons) Powell.
On June 12, 1954, Howard Ray was united in marriage to Myra Fay Sanders in Vienna during a double wedding ceremony that also united in marriage Myra’s twin sister, Mary, to Bob Harper.
In addition to his beloved wife of 64 years, Howard Ray is also survived by: 4 children – Becky Powell Turley and her husband Mike, Steve Powell and his wife Kathy, Debbie Powell Rigsby and her husband Bill all of Ozark and Lindsey Powell and his wife Lorelei of Creal Springs; 10 grandchildren – Brett & Kaela Turley of Marion, Leslie Turley of Nashville, Tennessee, Megan & Ryan Hill of New Burnside, Jillian Powell of Nashville, Tennessee, Tyler Rigsby of Portland, Oregon, Payton Rigsby of Louisville, Kentucky, Clinton & Andrea Rigsby of Goreville, Brooke & Steve Crim of Paducah, Kentucky, Mariah & Levi Bean of Creal Springs, and Grady Powell of Creal Springs; 7 great grandchildren – Lincoln & Amerie Turley, Ryder, Rieslyn & Rhett Hill, Duke Rigsby, and Caroline Bean; and a brother – Lowell Don (Janet) Powell of New Burnside.
In addition to his parents, Howard Ray was preceded in death by: an infant brother – Duane Odell Powell.
Howard Ray was a 1954 graduate of Vienna High School. He was employed as a sales manager at the Illinois Fruit Growers Exchange at Cobden and Heartland Harvest for a combined 37 years. Additionally, Howard Ray, along with his father and brother, operated Powell Produce for 35 years.
Howard Ray was a member of the Wise-Robinson Cemetery Board. He was also a founding board member of the Burnside Water District and served on the board of directors for 16 years. He was also a member of the New Burnside Grade School board and was serving at the time of the formation of the New Simpson Hill school district.
Howard Ray was a member and deacon at the Ozark Baptist Church. He enjoyed woodworking, mowing and gardening.
A funeral service honoring the life of Howard Ray Powell will be held Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at 1 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor Bud McDannel will officiate. Burial will be in the Wise-Robinson Cemetery.
Visitation will be conducted Wednesday, July 25, 2018, from 11 AM – 1 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
