James R. Newton, age 87 years, a resident of Metropolis and a former resident of Buncombe, passed away Thursday evening, June 28, 2018, at 11:35 PM at Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.
Jim was born January 25, 1931 in Trigg County, Kentucky. He was the son of Jesse and Effie Elizabeth (Fulks) Newton.
On May 7, 1966, Jim was united in marriage to Norma J. Kerley in Peoria, Illinois. She preceded him in death on May 8, 2011.
Jim is survived by: his sons – Larry (Beth) Newton of Bloomington and Deon Newton of Metropolis; 6 grandchildren – Noell Marie (Channing) Broussard, Brian(Gina) Newton, Lori Christine McCauley, Lisa Marie (Nic) Smith, Chelsea Lanelle Newton and Lindsay Danielle Newton; 11 great grandchildren – Chase Eric Arrington, Paige Alyse Arrington, Trenton Thomas, Morgan Hurt, Brycen Thomas, Nicolas Smith, Kate Smith, Claire Smith, Emma Smith, Josiah Smith, and Chloe Marie Newton; a great-great grandson – Maxon Thomas; 4 step grandchildren – Duane VanDuyn, Rene (Pat) Green, Amy VanDuyn, Joy Marchesano; 7 step great grandchildren – Paige Elizabeth Marchesano, Katlyn Elizabeth VanDuyn, Elizabeth Claire Green, Nicollette Airabella Marchesano, Seamuse Patrick Green, Lindsey Ava Marchesano, and Walter VanDuyn; 2 sisters – Juanita (Roy) Montgomery of Weaver, Alabama and Linda King of Council Bluffs, Iowa; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, Jim was preceded in death by: a son – Garry Newton; a sister – Helen Mosier; a step great grandson – Henry VanDuyn; and 4 brothers – Jesse D. Newton, Marvin D. Newton, Earl T. Newton, and George H. Newton.
Jim was a U.S. Army veteran. He was employed as a mechanical engineer at Caterpillar, Inc. in Peoria prior to his retirement in 1981. Jim was a member of the U.A.W. Local # 974 in East Peoria, IL.
He was a former member of the Masonic fraternity. Jim was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed a variety of hobbies including – bowling, hunting and fishing. Jim was an avid outdoorsman.
A service honoring the life of James R. Newton will be conducted Sunday, July 1, 2018, at 6 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
Inurnment will be at a later date in the Rock Springs Cemetery near Simpson.
Visitation will be held Sunday, July 1, 2018, from 4 PM – 6 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
