Hughye G. Thomas – Obituary

Hughye G. Thomas, age 82 years, a resident of rural Simpson, Illinois, passed away Tuesday morning, October 24, 2017, at 3:39 AM at his home.

Hughye was born August 25, 1935 in the Bloomfield community in Johnson County. He was the son of Lawrence and Violet (Whiteside) Thomas.

On November 4, 1961, Hughye was united in marriage to Louise Ross at the Pleasant Ridge Church near Bloomfield. She survives.

Other survivors include: their children – John Clark “J.C.” (Tammy) Thomas of New Baden, Violet Inez Thomas of Weslaco, Texas and Ross Lawrence Thomas of Simpson; 2 grandchildren – Tom (Jen) Timmermann of Morehead, Kentucky and Catherine (Brent) Davis of Chatham; 4 great grandchildren – Logan Davis, Ethan Davis, Aurora Davis, Caelin Timmermann; a sister – Margaret Johnson of Vienna; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Hughye was preceded in death by his parents.

Hughye was a 1953 graduate of Vienna High School. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged July 20, 1960. Hughye was employed as a correctional officer by the Illinois Department of Corrections. He served at Stateville Correctional Center later transferring to the Vienna Correctional Center. Hughye retired in 1990 with the rank of sergeant.

Hughye was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Church. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and horseback riding. Hughye had served as a parent/chaperone for many years with the 4-H on their trips to the Illinois State Fair.

Visitation will be held Thursday, October 26, 2017, from 10 AM – 12 Noon at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. The service will immediately follow also at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Whiteside Cemetery. Military graveside honors will be accorded.
