John E. Dunn – Obituary

John E. Dunn, age 87 years, a resident of rural Vienna, passed away Sunday afternoon, September 17, 2017, at 4:50 PM at his home.

John was born November 1, 1929 in Harrisburg, Illinois. He was the son of Herschel and Clarice E. (Pflueger) Dunn.

On December 23, 1951, John was united in marriage to Jean Kathryn Williams Galeener. She preceded him in death on August 20, 1989.

John is survived by: a sister – Bonnie Foley of New York City, New York; 2 brothers-in-law – George (his wife, Diane) Galeener and Jack Gray all of Vienna; a sister-in-law – Betsy (her husband, Sam) Duane of Tempe, Arizona; nephews: Tim Gray of Vienna, Mike Gray of Orlando, David Duane of Sacramento, California, John B. Foley of San Francisco, California; and Sam Duane, Jr. of Tempe, Arizona; great nieces and great nephews; as well as his extended family – Martha (her husband, Ralph) Childers, Suzanne Frazier, Elizabeth (her husband, Ted) Warner, Philip (his wife, Connie) Frazier, and Judy and the late Frank Nutty.

In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by: a sister-in-law – Jackie Gray, a nephew – Sam Gray, grandparents – Obe and May Dunn & John E. and Mary Pflueger; his father-in-law & mother-in-law – Edwin & Lois Galeener; and his longtime companion – Pauline Frazier.

John was a graduate of Vienna High School. He served in the U.S. Army as a pilot and flight school instructor. John was honorably discharged in 1955 with the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

John served his plumber’s apprenticeship with Earl Upton in Vienna. Following Mr. Upton’s retirement, John and his wife, Jean, purchased the business and operated Dunn’s Plumbing for many years. Later, he served as an Illinois State Plumbing inspector, prior to his retirement.

John was a member of the Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.). John had a great love for his country, was very patriotic and enjoyed studying and discussing history. He also was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed quail hunting and 4-wheeler riding with friends in Colorado. John also enjoyed and had taught ballroom dancing in Paducah and in Southern Illinois.

John was of the Christian faith and had attended the Vienna First United Methodist Church.

A service honoring the life of John Dunn will be conducted Thursday, September 21, 2017, at 1 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Rev. Joe Richard will officiate.

Burial will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Beggs-Gurley VFW Post # 5222 and the Illinois National Guard burial honors detail.

Visitation will be conducted from 11 AM – 1 PM Thursday, September 21, 2017, at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
