Eagles win volleyball home opener

By Ryan Wright

On Thursday, August 31st the Vienna Eagles volleyball team was able to outmatch Sesser Valier in a 2-1 match winning their first home game of the year. Game one began with Senior, Faith Guest scoring off serve to put the Eagles up 1-0, then Senior, Lindsey Holhubner was able to score two consecutive points in a row one of a block and another point off a spike giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead. While, Sesser was able to get back into game, tying things all even up at 6-6, the eagles scored three straight points putting them up 9-6 before Sesser could score again.

With the Eagles up 20-15, Holhubner, Guest and Junior, Alyssa Jones was able to get three points off of spikes making things 23-17, allowing a few possessions later to a game one win 25-18, Eagles win. Game two did not go as expected for the Eagles, Sesser came out unstoppable, as the Eagles couldn’t find a way to pull things back together losing 9-25 to Sesser, in the second match. Game three was played for a chance for both teams to take the win, the Eagles showing they were ready to go out and prove they were the better team, they took an 18-9 lead over Sesser.

Looking like the Eagles would take game three in easy fashion, Sesser was not done yet as they brought the game closer losing just 19-15 over the Eagles with time to try and make a comeback. However, the Eagles stepped up and made sure they came out with the win, finishing game three with a final score of 25-16. The Eagles volleyball team is 1-1 on the season, and is looking to have a great year. They will play again this Tuesday, September 5th away at Crab Orchard at 6:00pm and their next home game is scheduled for Thursday, September 7th against Galatia at 6:15pm.
