Eagles football team wins in double OT thriller

By Ryan Wright

The Vienna-Goreville football team hosted Johnson City in a Black Diamond Conference matchup Saturday, Sept. 9.

With both teams having a record of 1-1 on the year so far, the win was much desired by both teams.

The first quarter started with both teams not allowing points. But as time advanced forward the Eagles were able to get on the board.

With 5:12 left in the second quarter, the eagles went up 6-0 from a touchdown by senior Peyton Massey.

Both teams, evenly going back and forth, were heading into the fourth quarter all tied up at 6-6, after Johnson City was able to convert two field goals in the second and third quarters.

Senior Nolan Dahncke made a huge play in the fourth quarter with 11:52, scoring not only an Eagles’ touchdown, but also a two-point conversion granting the Eagles a 14-6 lead.

The Eagles were able to play solid defense throughout the fourth quarter. It looked like they had the game all sealed up before Johnson City threw a hail mary pass with 5.4 seconds left in the fourth.

Originally Dahncke had possession of the ball, however officials ruled the pass was complete by Johnson City and resulted in a touchdown, evening the game at 14-14, heading into overtime.

The first overtime resulted in no scores.

The game presumed in a second overtime where Danhcke was able to succeed scoring a touchdown.

With the Eagles up 6 points, Johnson City had to come up with a way to potentially tie it up or win the game ultimately.

Although Johnson City had a chance to make a final play, it was devastated as junior Kyle VanCleve ruined Johnson City’s hopes, picking off a pitch to win the game 20-14.

The Eagles next game will be on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Chester.
