Eagles captures win over Edwards County

The Vienna/Goreville football team took on Edwards County at home Saturday, Sept. 23, in a thrilling matchup.

Both teams played superior defense in the first quarter, not allowing either side to score.

The Eagles tried to keep up the solid defense in the second quarter, however Edwards County was able to score a touchdown with 4:46 left in the quarter. After getting denied of an extra point, from sophomore Aidan Kuhn blocking the football, Edwards County lead 6-0 at the end of the second quarter.

Senior Nolan Dahncke was able to score the first Eagles touchdown of the game in the third quarter, tying things even at 6-6, after finessing Edwards County with a spin move with 9:13 left.

With 1:50 left in the third quarter, Dahncke was able to score yet again, off a fumble recovery, giving the Eagles a 12-6 lead at the end of the third.

Edwards County was not ready to give up the game yet. With 7:41 left in the fourth quarter they scored a touchdown and was able to connect on the extra point, giving them a 13-12 lead over the Eagles.

Junior quarterback Logyn Frassoto took matters into his own hands, initialing looking for a pass to an open teammate, he ran all the way for a touchdown. Senior Chris Meyer was able to add an extra point as well giving the Eagles a 19-13 lead with 3:22 left in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles were able to shut down every opportunity Edwards County had at making a comeback, finishing the game in solid fashion, Eagles-19, Edwards County-13.

The win improved the Eagles to 3-2 on the season.

Their next game will be at home at 1:00 p.m. against Hamilton County.
