Johnson County Sheriff Charles Harner would like to warn residents about the total solar eclipse and the weekend prior to it.
Johnson County is expecting high volumes of traffic the weekend of Aug. 18-21. The total solar eclipse takes place on Monday, Aug. 21.
Go shopping for groceries, prescription medication, and other essentials before the weekend.
Also, fill fuel tanks well ahead of time. Shortages of essentials and fuel may occur.
Allow for additional travel time. Avoid the interstate if possible. Carry water and snacks in the vehicle for long travel times.
The response time of emergency services may be longer due to traffic.
Anyone who is expecting guests during the weekend of the eclipse is advised to make sure there is ample parking, off the street, so their vehicles doesn’t block traffic.
