Michael Charles Mathis – Obituary

Michael Charles Mathis, age 46 years, a resident of Marion, Illinois and a former resident of Johnson County, passed away Friday, February 10, 2017 at his home.

Michael was born October 28, 1970 in Paducah, Kentucky. He was the son of Charles E. “Eddie” Mathis and Nancy (Simmons) Mathis.

Michael is survived by: his mother and stepfather – Nancy and William R. Belford of Grantsburg; his children – Erik Mathis of Ozark, Savannah R. Mathis of Vienna, and Miranda R. Mathis of Ozark; a sister – Marsha Lynn Dodson of Vienna; a brother – Timothy Allen Mathis of rural Carbondale; a half-sister – Alice Faye Parkhurst; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and many dear friends.

In addition to his father, Michael was preceded in death by: an infant brother – Charles E. Mathis, Jr. and a sister – Mindy Rishae Mathis VanZant.

Michael was a member of the Vienna High School class of 1989. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard transportation division during Operation Desert Storm. Following his honorable discharge, Michael returned to Southern Illinois where he had been employed as a deck hand by Ingram Barge Company and later as a welder at Alpha Services, Inc. in Marion, Illinois.

Michael was a gifted artist and loved to draw. He also enjoyed music and playing the drums.

A private graveside service with military honors will be conducted at the Belford Family Cemetery.
