Larry “Gene” West, age 70 years, a resident of rural Cypress and a former resident of Earlville, Illinois, passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, February 10, 2017, at 2:31 AM at the Union County Hospital in Anna.
Larry was born August 2, 1946 in Cypress, Illinois. He was the second of six children born to Lowell G. and Hildah E. (Troutman) West.
Larry was united in marriage to Gayle Morse on June 4, 1966 at the Dixon Springs Baptist Church. She survives.
In addition to his wife, Larry is survived by: his mother – Hildah West of Cypress; a son – Gary (his wife, Nicole) West of Mendota; 2 grandchildren – Cheyenne and Logan; 2 sisters – Edith West of Cypress and Rebekah West of Indiana; 2 brothers – Dean (his wife, Donna) West of Cypress and Lonnie (his wife, Nancy) West of Dongola; 2 sisters-in-law – Kathryn Crowell of Florida and Paula Pike of Montgomery; 2 brothers-n-law – Jack Morse of Metropolis and Dayle Morse of Simpson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
In addition to his father, Larry was preceded in death by: a son – Larry Christopher West in 1989; a sister – Darlene Hurford; 2 sisters-in-law – Ruth Hager and Gloria Benavidez; and a brother-in-law – Bill Morse.
Larry was a 1964 graduate of Vienna High School. He was employed for 32 years as a forklift operator at Caterpillar, Inc. in Aurora, retiring in 1997. After returning home to Southern Illinois, Larry worked for Transcraft, Inc. in Anna and then spent 10 years working for Aisin Corporation in Marion.
Larry was a former member of the Earlville, IL Masonic Lodge. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Larry cherished time spent with his family and friends. He particularly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Larry was a faithful member and deacon of Bethany Baptist Church at Cypress.
A service honoring the life of Larry Gene West will be conducted Thursday morning, February 16, 2017, at 10 AM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor Jay Franklin will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in the Rock community in Pope County Illinois.
Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, February 15, 2017, from 6 PM – 8 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
