After coming off a promising win of 63-50, led by Vienna’s senior Justin Hoffard who was able to add in 3 points during the game against Century on Tuesday, Feb. 14, the Eagles looked to take a tough win over Trico on Saturday, Feb. 18, with this game being the last home game of the year for the Eagles.
The game started off with senior Brandon Casey splashing back to back three-pointers to put the Eagles up 6-2.
Junior Hugo Quintana then got to work for the Eagles scoring two consecutive baskets, one coming off a steal, to give the Eagles a 10-2 lead.
With 3:16 left in the first, senior Lucas Strickland knocked down a three-pointer then hit a basket and drew a foul converting on a three-point play to give the Eagles a 18-2 lead over Trico.
The Eagles 16-0 run in the first quarter gave them a 22-2 lead, finally coming to an end as Trico is able to desperately score a basket with 1:35 left in the first, 22-4 Vienna.
At the end of the first quarter the Eagles led 23-10 over Trico.
As the second quarter got underway Casey hit a three-pointer to put the Eagles up 30-13. Then with 3:39 left Strickland was able to drive to the basket and make a spectacular reverse layup to make the score, 36-20.
Trico started to find a groove as they went on a 9-0 run to make the score 40-33, Vienna still with the lead.
Junior Ben Daine stepped up for the Eagles as he hit back to back floaters to give the Eagles the lead, 44-33, with 39 seconds left in the second quarter.
The Eagles headed into halftime leading 46-35 over Trico.
In the third quarter things got interesting as Trico was able to go on a 8-0 run to bring the deficit within three points, 46-43.
With 4:33 left in the third, Daine was able to convert a three-point play to increase the score for the Eagles, 52-43. The Eagles then went on a 6-0 run to take control of the ball game and give themselve a larger lead, 58-45.
The third quarter ended with the Eagles leading 65-47 and looked to finish Trico in the final quarter of the game.
In the fourth quarter the Eagles were able to make a statement as they cruised past Trico with Casey slamming down a dunk to put the Eagles up late in the fourth 71-51.
Senior Justin Hoffard wowed the crowd knocking down a three-pointer with 15 seconds left in the game to conclude a successful last home game of the season, Eagles 81, Trico 62.
Leading scorers included Daine with 21 points, Strickland with 20 and Casey with 15.
