Carl Leon Taylor, 84, passed away Monday evening, February 20, 2017, during a final trip to the emergency room. He was pronounced dead by EMTs at the Mt. Vernon, Indiana fire station.
Carl was born February 18, 1933, on his family’s farm in Johnson County, Illinois, the oldest son of six children born to James Ralph Taylor and Doris Murphy. After graduating from Vienna High School in 1951, Carl joined the Air Force and saw duty in Japan during the Korean Conflict. Carl used his VA benefits to study electrical technology at the Vocational Technical Institute at SIU in Carbondale.
On March 23, 1957, Carl married another Johnson County native and VTI student, Bonnie Sue Goddard, from the hamlet of Buncombe. Two children were born from their union, Mark Alan and Carla Joan. The family bond was so strong that after the deaths of Bonnie’s father and Carl’s mother, Helen Goddard and James Ralph Taylor married and spent their last years in Vienna.
In 1959 Lampley Electric of Carmi hired Carl to work in the new industry of television repair, and the family has been in Carmi ever since. Carl taught electronics in the 1970s and 1980s at the Vocational School at Centerville operated by the Carmi school system. As the school was winding down Carl was diagnosed with cancer, which was successfully treated with chemo and radiation. Carl was then hired as a custodian at Jefferson School, where he worked until his retirement in 1998.
Carl was a “Jack of all trades” with a very inventive mind. He loved to read and had a broad knowledge base, which he was happy to share. One of his greatest joys was interacting with children.
Carl attended Crossroads Church. While in the Air Force, Carl participated in The Navigators’ Topical Memory System training which led to a strong, lifelong Christian faith.
Carl is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of Carmi. His son, Mark Alan Taylor and wife Vicky (Kemp) live in rural Mt. Vernon, Illinois, while Carla Joan and her husband Duane Ediger live in Nolensville, Tennessee. His grandchildren are Mathew Alan Taylor (wife Pam Kehoe) of Southington, Ohio, and Amanda Dawn Carnes (husband Mike Carnes), and two step-grandchildren, Jason Lee Ediger of Santa Rosa, California and Brooke Mariah Boor (husband Zach Boor) of Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado. Great-grandchildren include Madison Abigail Taylor, Wyatt Lane Carnes, Jacob Dylan Taylor and one step-great-grandchild, Scarlett Lee Ediger.
Carl has three living brothers, Kenneth (Faye) Taylor of Vienna, Connie (Janice) Taylor of Vienna, Jimmy (June) Taylor of Mesa, Arizona, and one sister, Joyce (Jim Bob) Gray of Vienna;
