Mary A. Hazel – Obituary

Mary A. (Slankard) Hazel, age 84 years, a resident of Grantsburg, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2017, at 4:45 P.M.

Mary was born March 30, 1932 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. She was the eldest of 5 daughters born to Johnny and Wraynella (Clark) Slankard.

On April 25, 1955, Mary was united in marriage to Floyd Wayne Hazel in Chicago, Illinois. He preceded her in death on February 8, 2010.

Mary is survived by: her children – Rhonda Hazel Romines of Simpson; Stella Hazel Oyer (her husband, Brad) of Ashmore; Kevin (his wife, Gina) Rushing of Indiana and Keith Rushing of Alaska; 4 grandchildren – Kristy Holmes, Jennifer Barnes, Jeffrey Barnes, and Cynthia Grice; 7 great grandchildren – Kaitlen King, Michael King, Jaydan Holmes, Kaidan Holmes, Damien Chardon, Cecilia Chardon, and Sophia Barnes; and 4 sisters – Gloria Jean Borchelt, Rose Lee Rohrer, Ruth Ann Ruffino and Leona Purdin.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by a granddaughter – Michelle Rushing.

Mary was a graduate of the Metropolis High School. She had been employed at the former Good Luck Glove Factory at both the Vienna and Metropolis facilities. Mary was also a beautician and for many years operated a beauty shop at her home. For over 25 years, Mary worked as a mass transit bus driver for the Shawnee Development Council transportation department.

Mary was a member of the Baptist faith. She cherished time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary had also enjoyed fishing.

A graveside service honoring the life of Mary A. Hazel will be held Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at 1 P.M. at the Reevesville Cemetery. Those attending the service are asked to gather at the cemetery at 12:45 P.M.

There will be no public visitation.

The preferred form of remembrance is memorial contributions to the Heather Harper Treat Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 98, Vienna, IL 62995.
