Betty DeLeonardo – Obituary

Betty-L-DeleonardoBetty DeLeonardo, age 83, of Vienna, Illinois died peacefully at her home Sunday April 3, 2016. Her daughter Diane was with her.

She was born November 6, 1932, in Goreville, Illinois to Virgil and Mary (Anderson) Hurley.

Betty graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1980 with honors. She received her degree in English literature and taught at the Vienna Township High School and Shawnee Community College.

Betty  volunteered at the Anna Bixby Women’s Center in Harrisburg and served  on the boards of the Vienna Public Library and the local Area Agency on Aging.  She was a staunch believer in civil rights and a longtime supporter of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, John DeLeonardo, who had owned John De Chevy-Olds in Vienna; also, her brothers Don and Virgil Hurley, her sisters Deloris Hurley and Ann Evetts and her son-in-law Don Bilyeu.

She is survived by her four children: Paula Bilyeu of Hagerstown, Maryland,  Leigh DeLeonardo of Woodstock, Diane DeLeonardo of Springfield, and David DeLeonardo of Hayward, California.  Also, son-in-law, Greg Walker, daughter-in-law, Vicki DeLeonardo and sister-in-law Maxine Hurley.  She was very proud of her 6 grandchildren: Brianne Bilyeu, Erin Bilyeu, Sidney Muncy DeLeonardo, Casey Muncy-DeLeonardo,  Haley DeLeonardo-Walker and Peter DeLeonardo.

A service celebrating the life of Betty DeLeonardo will be held Thursday, April 7, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.

Betty’s granddaughter, Brianne Bilyeu, will serve as the celebrant of the service.  A eulogy will be delivered by Betty’s dear friend, Rosemary O’Keefe.

A private committal service will be conducted at the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Betty’s name to The Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, Alabama 36104.

  1. I was so sad to hear about the passing of Betty DeLeonard. I had the pure Joy and pleasure of getting to know Betty over these past several years. Betty was an amazing person who inspired me to learn and grow as an individual. Her intelligence was impressive and her kindness to me was warmly received. I loved being in her presence and admired her as a beautiful human being. I appreciated the Life of this wonderful women and I will miss her.
