Betty L. Mathis, age 75, a resident of Metropolis and a former resident of Vienna, passed away Thursday afternoon, February 11, 2016, at 2:14 PM at her home.
Betty was born June 10, 1940 in Grantsburg, Illinois. She was the daughter of Charles Estes, Jr. and Brooksie (Simmons) Estes.
On May 3, 1958, Betty was united in marriage to Tommy Mathis in Corinth, Mississippi. He survives.
In addition to her husband, Betty is survived by: 2 daughters – Tamri Huckelberry of Metropolis and Sheila (Rick) Reichert of Vienna; a granddaughter – Christy (Michael) Kennedy of Metropolis; and her beloved canine companion, Maggie.
Betty was preceded in death by: her parents – Charles Estes, Jr. and Brooksie Estes Turner; an infant sister – Myrna June Estes; and her stepfather – Elmer Riley Turner.
Betty was a 1958 graduate of Vienna High School. In the mid-1970s Betty founded Little Egyptian Realty which she owned and operated until the mid-1980s. She then worked in the business office of Shawnee Correctional Center and later the Vienna Correctional Center prior to her retirement in 2004.
Betty was a member of the Egyptian Chapter # 30 Order of the Eastern Star and had formerly served as Mother Advisor for the local International Order of the Rainbow For Girls Gleaner Star Assembly # 110. She was also a member of the Vienna Vivacious Red Hat Society.
Betty and Tommy worshipped at the First Christian Church in Vienna. She enjoyed helping with the Saturday night pre-football game meals. Betty cherished time spent with her family and particularly spending time with her granddaughter, Christy. Betty also enjoyed the outdoors boating, camping and 4-wheeler riding with friends in Colorado. She is also remembered for her love of “reading in the sunshine.”
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, February 14, 2016, at 2 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Brother Les Chamberlain will officiate. Burial will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11 AM – 2 PM Sunday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
