Shirley Russell, age 86, a resident of Simpson, Illinois, passed away Thursday morning, January 14, 2016, at 3:30 a.m. at her home.
Shirley was born February 10, 1929. She was the daughter of Harold and Glanna Kerley.
On January 26, 1946, Shirley was united in marriage to William L. “Bill” Russell in Pope County Illinois. He preceded her in death on December 8, 2007.
Survivors include: her daughter – Glenna Branscum and her husband Cliff of Simpson; 2 grandsons – Kevin Branscum and Kyle Branscum; 4 great grandchildren – Logan, Kylie, Parker and Makensey Branscum; a dear friend – Curt Evitts of the Glendale community; a step-sister – Floy Lee of Peoria; her former granddaughters-in-law – Donna and Chrissy; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by: her stepmother – Nina Marie Kerley; a sister – Mary Lou Castleman; 2 step-sisters – Marianna Belcher and Hazel Stallings; and a half-sister – Helen Lucille Kohlbus.
Shirley attended the Robbs High School. She served as a bus driver for the Simpson Public School and later the New Simpson Hill School for many years. Shirley was also employed for over 20 years by the United States Postal Service. She first worked as a postal clerk, later as a postmaster relief/replacement and lastly as the postmaster of the Simpson, Illinois Post Office for approximately 8 years prior to her retirement in January 2015.
Shirley had served as the Simpson village treasurer for many years. She was a former member of the Banner Chapter # 614 Order of the Eastern Star at Ganntown. Shirley was of the Baptist faith.
Shirley is remembered for her strong work ethic and her love for and devotion to her family. She also cherished her pets.
A memorial service will be conducted Sunday afternoon, January 17, 2016, at 3 p.m. at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Rev. David Faulkner will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
