Wanda Maxine Rose – Obituary

Wanda Maxine Rose, age 87 years, a resident of Marion, Illinois, passed away Monday evening, October 5, 2015, at 5:41 p.m. at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.

Wanda was born October 13, 1927 in rural Pope County Illinois.  She was the eldest of four daughters born to Joyce and Lula (Carter) Rose.

Wanda was formerly united in marriage to Perry “Jeff” Gillespie.

Survivors include: three granddaughters – Brandi Roselle, Jinne Figueroa, and Angela Sanchez; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; a sister – Barbara Ann Volkmann of Kankakee; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many dear friends.

In addition to her parents, Wanda was preceded in death by: two sons – Lance Jeffrey Gillespie and Douglas Mark Gillespie; and two sisters – Ida Lee Rose Hill and Shirley Rose Martin.

Wanda spent most of her adult life living in California, where she was employed by the California Department of Transportation as a secretary for approximately 40 years.  Following her retirement, Wanda was called back to service as a consultant prior to her return to Southern Illinois in the mid-1990s.

Wanda had many interests.  She adored her animals and also enjoyed spending time sitting on her patio enjoying her plants and the outdoors.  Wanda truly had a “green” thumb.  Wanda also was a voracious reader and enjoyed reading mystery novels.  She prided herself on being able to read “a book per day.”  Wanda also stayed very up-to-date on current events and read several newspapers and magazines.  Wanda also had an interest in genealogy and studying her family tree.  In her final days, Wanda spent much time reminiscing about friends and family that she recalled from her youth.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 10, 2015, at Zion Cemetery, east of Ozark.  Visitation will be from 9:30 – 10 a.m. Saturday at the cemetery.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Wanda’s household assistant, Kayley Morris, for her love, care, friendship, and attention during Wanda’s final months.  Also, to the staff of the Heartland Regional Medical Center for their concern and gentle care provided to Wanda.
