“Tina Colson and the spirit squad were the catalyst,” Vienna High School cheerleading coach Toni Henderson explained when talking about the rebirth of the cheerleading squad. Last year, the team only had five girls. This year it currently boasts a roster of 15 girls, plus Brian Pender.
“I catch myself a lot saying things like ‘Okay girls, great job! And Brian!’ He’s been an awesome asset to our stunting.” Coach Henderson attributes much of this years success to Tina Colson’s help, Henderson’s own growth and experience as a cheer coach, and to holding the tryouts much earlier. Tryouts for this season’s squad was in May of last year, with the first practice taking place mid-August.
Not content to just lead the crowd at basketball games, competing is the future for the Vienna High School cheerleaders. Coach Henderson will be attending a conference of the Illinois Cheerleading Coach Association next month. She aims to gather lots of information so that she can prepare her team.
According to Henderson, the primary cause of the cheerleading squads resurgence falls solely upon the cheerleaders themselves. “The group of girls I have and how well they work together is what has made all this happen, and Brian”
