Robert C. Gurley – Obituary

Robert C. Gurley, age 79 years, a resident of Metropolis and a native of the Buncombe community, passed away Sunday evening, January 25, 2015, at 10:25 PM at the Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.

Robert was born May 31, 1935 on the family farm near Buncombe.  He was the son of Jesse & Opal (Pentecost) Gurley.

Robert was united in marriage to Claudette J. “JoAnn” Hopkins in 1956.  She preceded him in death on February 3, 2011.

Robert is survived by his brother & sister-in-Law – Ray G. & Linda L. Gurley of Buncombe.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Robert was preceded in death by his stepmother – Lora Mae Gurley and his half-brother – Herbert Jesse Gurley, who was killed in action aboard the U.S.S. Arizona in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Robert was a 1954 graduate of Vienna High School.  He earned a Bachelor Degree in Education from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and later earned his Master of Education Degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign.  Robert was an educator.  He taught Middle School for many years in the Granite City Public School system prior to his retirement.

Robert was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.  He enjoyed fishing and the occasional hunting trip.  Robert particularly enjoyed visiting southern Illinois and spending time on the family farm.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, January 28, 2015, at 2:30 p.m. at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.  Dr. Ed Hollis will officiate.  Burial will be in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, near Buncombe.

Visitation will be held Wednesday afternoon, January 28, 2015, from 1 – 2:30 p.m. at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
