Union County crash kills two, closes miles of Illinois 146 for hours

The Illinois State Police are investigating a traffic crash, which occurred on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014 at approximately 12:57 p.m. that killed a Missouri man and his 18-month old passenger.

The crash was located on Illinois Rt. 146, 1/10th of a mile east of Locust Grove Road in Union County.

According to the Illinois State Police preliminary report, a 2012 Toyota Yaris, driven by Lenzie M. Johnson, 43, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., was travelling west on Rt. 146 with an 18-month old male passenger when he traveled for unknown reasons on a hill crest into the path of a eastbound 2012 Chevrolet Cruze.

The driver of the Cruze, a 66 year-old female from Piedmont, Mo., attempted to move to the right.

The two vehicles struck head on.

The drivers of both vehicles were wearing seat belts and the child was in a child safety seat.

Johnson was transported to Union County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His 18-month old passenger was flown to a St. Louis hospital with life threatening injuries.

ISP was notified Friday afternoon by the St. Louis hospital personnel that the 18-month old child involved in the accident had died.

The 66-year old woman was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital with non-life threatening injuries. ISP has not released her name.

Route 146 was closed from Rt. 37 at West Vienna to Interstate 57 near Anna for several hours while police investigated the crash. The highway was reopened to traffic at around 5:00 p.m. Thursday.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
