George Raymond Mace, age 80 years, a resident of Goreville and a former resident of Carbondale, passed away while visiting his family Wednesday, June 11, 2014. George was extremely supportive and proud of his family. He is survived by his daughter- Pamela L. Ruzich of Ozark, IL; 3 sons Andrew K. Mace of Calvert City, KY, Raymond M. Mace of San Francisco, CA, Benjamin T. Mace of Miami Beach, FL; 3 Grandchildren- Jereme A. Lence, Nicole L. Lence & Taylor M. Mace. As a loving father, grandfather, professor, and friend, George will be greatly missed.
George was a world-renowned scholar and author highly regarded for his studies in western political and legal theory, democratic theory, and American constitutional history. He published two books during his extensive career.
George was born in Pueblo, CO but grew up in Fresno, CA. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict service from December 1, 1954 to November 30, 1956. He received his Ph.D. in Political Philosophy from Claremont Graduate University. He was in administration at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale including Vice President for Administration and Campus Treasurer, Vice President for University Relations, acting Vice President for Fiscal Affairs, but preferred to be known as a teacher.
A Memorial service will be held Sunday afternoon, June 22, 2014 at 2PM at the Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Military honors will be accorded by the Beggs-Gurley VFW Post #5222 and by the Illinois National Guard Burial Honors Details.
Family may receive friends from 1:30PM-2PM Sunday at the Bailey Funeral Home.
