VHS hosts obstacle course, faculty compete

ShoemateNational-Guard-courseVienna High School students had an opportunity Monday to experience a simulated training course of the National Guard. Representatives from the Illinois National Guard were at the high school with a figure-eight inflatable obstacle course that included climbing, sliding, crawling and jumping.

The National Guard representatives from Springfield, Illinois visited the high school on a recruitment mission. Recruiter Staff Sergeant Adam Lock and his men visit area high schools throughout the year, providing information about the National Guard. The National Guard offers fully paid college tuitions for qualifying candidates. Anyone interested in information on the National Guard can contact Staff Sergeant Lock at 618-383-4859 or 1800-GO-GUARD, or visit www.nationalguard.com

Side note:

VHS superindentent Edwin Shoemate accepted and won a challenge on the obstacle course from colleague Mr. Stafford. Because of his speed, Mr. Shoemate (far right in photo) appeared to be a blur as he crossed the finish line.

Dear Editor Hinton,

Please find attached some additional photos that more clearly depict what happened.
I also have eye witnesses who would have explained their account of the “race”.
Blake Crain, student, “It was very clear that Mr. Stafford was the winner of the obstacle course race.  His determination and grit edge out over Mr. Shoemate to prove his true abilities.”
Thanks,
Joshua Stafford
