The Vienna High School boy’s basketball team opened its season last Monday night with a 58-42 win over Century in first round action at the Vienna Classic Tournament. The remainder of the Eagles’ tourney games are: Wednesday vs. Meridian at 7:45 p.m.; Friday vs. Massac County at 7:45 p.m.; Saturday vs. Carrier Mills at 6:15 p.m.
Against Century, the Eagles led 10-4 after the first period. A three-pointer by Lucas Wright with time running out in the second quarter gave Vienna an 18-9 halftime lead. Vienna opened the third quarter with a 12-3 run to push its lead to 30-12 with 4:32 left in the period. Zach Moore, Nathan Gearing and Quinnton Bent provided the scoring during the spurt. The Centurions trimmed Vienna’s lead to 37-23 at the end of the frame. With 3:31 left in the game, Century had narrowed the gap to 46-37, when Bent completed a three point play to put Vienna’s lead back to double digits. A minute later, Wright made a pair of free throws, increasing the Eagles’ lead to 51-37. Century got within 51-42 with just over a minute to play, but Vienna ended the game with a 7-0 run to make the final margin. Vienna’s Quinnton Bent and Century’s Blake Crane each scored 14 points to share game high scorer honors.
