Vienna faces narrow loss against Goreville

In high school volleyball action last Monday night, Vienna lost a close match in three sets at Goreville, 26-24, 19-25, 23-25.

The Lady Eagles found themselves trailing 14-6 in the first set before they began to chip away at Goreville’s lead. They got within 21-20 on a kill by Harley McIlwain, but the Lady Blackats scored the next three points to push their lead to 24-21. Vienna then ran off five straight points, with McIlwain getting another kill and Becky Reeder coming up with a key block to seal the win.

In the second set, the Lady Eagles were ahead until Goreville tied it at 16-16. The Lady Blackcats went on to take a 21-18 lead, then outscored Vienna 4-1 the rest of the way. The third set was close in the early going before Goreville opened up a 16-9 lead. The Lady Eagles battled back to tie it at 18-18, then took a 19-18 lead on a kill by Meighan Smith. Vienna went ahead 23-21, but the Lady Blackcats ended the set on a 4-0 run to win the match.

Up next for Vienna: Thursday (Sept. 19) home vs. Galatia; Saturday at Massac County tournament; next Tuesday (Sept. 24) at Johnston City.
