Ullin comes to life during annual Cache River Days

The 19th annual Cache River Days festival in Ullin is set for September 6, 7 and 8. This year’s theme is “Cache River Roots Run Deep.”

The annual event brings old friends back together, and invites new ones, to spend the week end visiting and enjoying planned activities at the Ullin ballpark.

Along with all the usual activities, two new events are on Sunday’s agenda.

Beginning at 1 p.m. on Sept. 8 there will be carnival games for kids of all ages.

Also at 1 p.m. there will be an afternoon of fun, music, comedy and games in the park pavilion as “The Zeb and Zory Mae Show” presents “A Tribute to Donald R. Miller.” Mr. Miller, a local musician, historian and story teller, shared his talents for years at Cache River Days as well as many other community events and gatherings. He passed away in 2011. His family members and friends will sing, play music, dance and share laughs all in his honor. Come prepared to sing along and have fun.

The Cache River Days festivities will kick off on Thursday night, September 5, with a community worship service under the park pavilion at 6 p.m.

The beauty pageant is set for Friday night inside the Leona Brust Civic Center (old school gym). It starts at 6 p.m. Royalty will be crowned in four age groups. There will also be a baby contest that goes throughout the weekend. For more information call 618-845-3445 or 618-845-3612.

The welcome tent will be open on Saturday from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. where t-shirts and bounce blast tickets will be available. Bounce Blast will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There will also be exhibits presented by Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge which will include live animals. For canoe trips starting at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. call 618-634-2231 or sign up at welcome tent.

From 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. there will be a pancake breakfast at Cross Roads United Methodist Church, located just west of town.

Flea markets, antique and craft sales and food vendors will be open in the park from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., as well as yard sales throughout the town.

The duck calling competition registration begins at 8 a.m. in the gym. For more information call 618-711-7610. The junior class competition starts at 9 a.m.

At 7:15 a.m. packets for 5K Run (walk) can be picked up at the welcome tent. The event starts at 8 a.m. Call 618-697-5910 for more information.

Me and Ma’s PR Express train rides will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Century High School’s F.F.A. will have their petting zoo open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be face painting and balloons all day.

A slow pitch softball tournament, sponsored by the Ullin Park Boosters, will be from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.

The parade starts at 11 a.m. If you would like to participate in the parade, line up at Bell Chapel at 10:30. Trophies and awards will be given out at 11:45 at the welcome tent.

The Cache River Music Festival in the park pavilion starts at 12:30 with local favorites Glory Road Travelers, New Harmony Singers, Dakota Cummins and Family and the K&I Drifters. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy an afternoon of free bluegrass, gospel and country music.

On Sunday, September 8, the goose calling registration begins at 8 a.m. with competition starting at 9:00.

The welcome tent and vendors will be open from 9-4. Bounce Blast is from 10-4 and train rides from 10-5. Carnival games, ball games and the Zeb and Zory Mae Show all start at 1 p.m. The baby contest ends at 3:15 with trophy presentation in the pavilion at 3:45.
