Illinois State Police responded to a one-vehicle accident that occurred late Sunday morning, April 7, on Illinois Rt. 146, east of Vienna, at Concord Church Road.
Phyllis Gulati, 66, of St. Petersburg, Fla., the driver, received serious, but nonlife threatening injuries, according to ISP.
Gulati’s mother, 91-year old Mary Ozment of Marion, Ill. was a passenger of the vehicle. She received minor injuries.
Johnson County Ambulance Service transported both occupants to an area hospital.
The Vienna Fire Department also responded for extrication of the occupants.
Police said Gulati was east bound on Rt. 146 when she crossed the center line.
She over corrected twice, leaving the roadway on the west bound side.
The vehicle struck a small culvert, causing it to roll several times.
Sally Joe Billingsley of Johnson County, a witness to the accident, told The Vienna Times that she was travelling west on Rt. 146 when she crested a hill and saw the Gulati vehicle swerving out of control.
“It was heading right at me when it ran off the road,” she reported.
Billingsley said she saw the SUV roll three times. “I was afraid it was going to roll right into me.”
Though shaken, Billingsley was not injured.
