Joellen (Burnett) Newberry – Obituary

Joellen (Burnett) Newberry, 58, a resident of rural Grantsburg, IL (the Benton community), passed away Wednesday morning January 9, 2013 at 4:34 a.m. at her home.

She was born March 23, 1954 in Paducah, KY. She was the daughter of E.L. Burnett and Mary M. (Rose) Burnett.

Joellen was united in marriage to Ronald G. Newberry on November 3, 1973 at the Benton community Church. He survives.

Other Survivors include:

A son- Casey Newberry of Grantsburg, IL.

Two grandchildren – Brody Chad Newberry and Linzy Jo Newberry.

A brother – John Burnett of Draffenville, KY.

Two sisters –  Rosemary (Lowell) Helm and Linda Burnam, both of the Benton community.

Mother-in-law – Marie Newberry of Dongola, IL.

Brothers-in-law- Bob Murley of the Benton community and Steven Edward Newberry of Dongola.

Sister-in-law- Karen Sperry of Dongola.

Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and other relatives and many dear friends

In addition to her parents, Joellen was preceded in death by:

A sister- Judy Murley

Father-in-law- Collin E. Newberry

Sister-in-law- Wanda Burnett

Brother-in-law- Terry Burnam

Joellen was a 1972 graduate of Vienna High School and had attended the Patricia Stevens Career College in St. Louis, MO. She was employed as an operator at E.E.I. from 1978 until declining health forced her to retire in 2011.

Joellen was a member of the Anna Moose Lodge  Ladies Auxiliary. She loved clogging and was a founding member of the Johnson County Cloggers. Joellen was an avid fundraiser for the Relay for Life, SIU Scholarship Foundation and the M.D.A.

She loved her church and church family at Simpson Baptist Church. She was specially recognized by her church on September 23, 2012 which was designated “Joellen Newberry” Day. Joellen has served as a Bible School Teacher and Song Leader. She loved music and was an avid pianist and singer.

She loved to garden and was a voracious reader. Joellen is remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She will be greatly missed by all.

Funeral Services will be held Friday January 11, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, IL. Pastor Brian Murley will officiate. Burial will be in the Rentfro Cemetery near Grantsburg.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
