Eastbound lanes of I-24 near Vienna should re-open soon.

Interstate 24 in Illinois remains shut down near exit 16 in both directions Wednesday evening due to a major vehicle crash.

Emergency personnel remain on the scene of a multiple-injury two-vehicle accident near Vienna in southern Illinois.

Six people were reportedly injured. Three airlift and three ground ambulances transported the injured to area hospitals.

Illinois State Police’s reconstruction team, Vienna Fire Department and IDOT’s cleanup crews are still on the site.

The eastbound lane should be re-opened soon, while the westbound lane is expected to be closed for several hours.

Motorist that must travel through Johnson County on Interstate 24 are encouraged not to, or in an emergency, use extreme caution throughout the night.

An emergency shelter has been opened for stranded travelers at Fellowship Baptist Church in Vienna. The church is located on Senior Avenue, one block west of US 45 and six blocks north of Rt. 146.
