Lena Tweedy

Lena Tweedy, 90, of Vienna, and formerly of Murphysboro, died at 9:25 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, in Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis. She suffered a major stroke in July of this year from which she could not recover.

Lena was born on Oct. 28, 1922, in Pomona, the daughter of Riley and Claudia Nance Tripp.

She married Ward Tweedy on Sept. 16, 1941, in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He passed away on July 23, 1993.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Dianna and Larry Choate, of Grantsburg; one brother, Gordon Tripp of Herrin; one sister, Virginia Troin of Collinsville; grandchildren Joshua (Tommie) Choate of League City, Texas, and Janna (Matt) Woodfall of Philpot, Ky.; great-grandchildren Chandler, Kaylynn, Titus, Isaac, Josiah and Silas; step-granddaughters, Logan and Kayla; great-great-granddaughter, Taylen; and numerous nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ogle and Preston; and sisters, Verna, Vivian and Connie.

She was a member of Dutch Ridge Church as a young woman and attended Pleasant Valley Church in Grantsburg for many years. She was an avid gardener and loved being outdoors. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked many years at Lustour Corp. in Murphysboro retiring in 1980.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, with Matthew Woodfall officiating with visitation from noon until the time of the funeral at Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro. Burial will be in Murdale Garden Cemetery in Murphysboro.

Memorials can be made to the Dutch Ridge Cemetery Fund in Pomona.
