Eagle’s first ever play-off game at home Saturday

By Mike McGinnis

The Vienna-Goreville varsity football squad lost at Johnston City last Saturday, by the score of 17-14. The Indians kicked a 34 yard field goal with just under three seconds left in the game to break a 14-14 tie.  V-G finished its regular season with a 6-3 record, with two of those losses coming by a total of four points. The Eagles will play their first ever play-off game this Saturday against Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn, at Vienna. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.

After receiving the opening kick-off, Johnston City took just four plays to grab the lead when they scored on a one yard run and kicked the extra point, to go ahead 7-0. The score remained that until the Eagles went on an eight play, 58 yard drive, that Kyefer Cavins completed with an 11 yard touchdown run at the 0:46 mark of the second quarter.  The point after kick was no good, making the halftime score 7-6.

The Eagles were forced to punt on their first possession of the second half.  Johnston City took over at their own 15 yard line and moved out to the 43 before Caleb Belcher intercepted a pass, giving V-G the ball in Indian territory. From there, the Eagles drove down to the Johnston City 23 yard line but were unable to score as a fourth down pass was incomplete. The Indians then went on a 72 yard drive, scoring on an eight yard screen pass, to push their lead to 14-6. On its next possession, V-G tied it at 14-14 when Connor Seavers scored on a 13 yard run and also carried for the two point conversion. A key play in the drive was a fourth down pass from Christian Dahncke to Cavins that gave the Eagles a first down at the Johnston City 38 yard line. Johnston City returned the ensuing kick-off to its own 31, then drove to the V-G 16 before kicking the game winning field goal.

Caleb Belcher led V-G in rushing with 65 yards on 12 carries. Kyefer Cavins rushed 10 times for 45 yards, and Connor Seavers carried eight times for 41 yards.
