Prudence McKenzie, age 95 years, a resident of Vienna, Illinois, departed this life Friday morning, September 14, 2012, at 12:38 AM at Hillview Health Care Center in Vienna.
Prudence was born November 29, 1916 in Vienna, IL. She was the daughter of Franklin and Minnie (File) Gurley. At an early age and due to the illness and death of her birth parents, Prudence was raised by her sister and brother-in-law, A.M. and Lula Hester.
Prudence was united in marriage to Ray McKenzie on August 4, 1935. He preceded her in death in 1969. She was later united in marriage to George McKenzie on April 19, 1977 and he preceded her in death in 1985.
Survivors include her 4 children – Mary Lou Davis of Salem, IL; Jackie Fisher, and her husband Bob, of Dongola, IL; Jimmy McKenzie, and his wife Bess, of Bremen, IN; Bill McKenzie of Vienna, IL and stepson – George McKenzie, Jr. of Walworth, WI, eight grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
In addition to her parents, Prudence was preceded in death by three sisters – Bertha Olive, Lula Hester and Hazel Davis; a brother – Melvin Gurley; a foster brother – Joe Hester; a daughter-in-law – Mary Lou McKenzie; and a son-in-law – Bernard Davis.
Prudence developed a strong work ethic at a very young age and her hands were never idle. Prudence spent her entire life living and working in and around Vienna. She and her family owned and operated McKenzie Grocery in Vienna for 15 years.
Prudence was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Vienna, until she became ill in 1999. She had also been a faithful member of the Johnson County Homemaker’s Extension and the Johnson County Republican Women’s Club.
Prudence enjoyed working in her yard, gardening, and raising African Violets. She also enjoyed quilting. Prudence loved her family and her home and was happiest when surrounded by those she loved.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon, September 16, 2012, at 2 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor Steve Watkins will officiate. Burial will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 12 Noon – 2 PM Sunday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
