The Vienna-Goreville varsity football team defeated Sesser-Valier-Wilsonville-Woodlawn Saturday at Vienna, by the score of 27-6, giving head coach Mike Rude his 200th career win. It was the third straight win for the Eagles, and makes their season record 3-1.

On the Eagles’ second possession of the game, Kyefer Cavins broke loose for runs of 25 and 19 yards, to put V-G on the Red Devils’ two-yard line. Connor Seavers ran it in from there and Mason Bishop kicked the extra point to put V-G in the lead 7-0 at the 2:47 mark of the first quarter. S-V-W-W scored their only points on a 13-yard touchdown pass about halfway through the second period. The pass for the conversion was incomplete, keeping V-G ahead 7-6. The Eagles answered by going on a 58-yard drive that took four minutes off the clock. Two key plays that kept the drive alive: Alex Lloyd made a nice catch of a pass from quarterback Christian Dahncke for a first down, and on the next play Cavins reeled off a 26 yard run to the Red Devils’ 13. Four plays later, Cavins scored on a two yard run and Caleb Belcher passed to Lloyd for the extra points, giving the Eagles a 15-6 halftime lead.

V-G took the second half kick-off and moved 83 yards. Cavins completed the drive with a 20-yard touchdown run, extending the Eagles’ lead to 21-6. S-V-W-W took the ensuing kick-off and drove deep into Eagle territory before the V-G defense held and the Eagles took over on downs. V-G closed out the scoring on a one-yard run by Seavers with 7:44 left to play in the game.

Coach Rude was quick to praise coach Al Way for his “offensive game plan that was outstanding.” He also credited the defense with playing “six straight quarters of football on defense,” referring to the Eagles’ second half shutout of Fairfield, and then allowing S-V-W-W just one touchdown.

The Eagles were again successful running the ball as they had 290 yards on the ground. Belcher led the way with 102 yards, while Cavins had 101, to go with two touchdowns. Seavers also scored twice, and added 71 yards rushing.

The varsity squad next plays this Friday at Elverado, with kick-off set for 7:00 p.m. The sophomores are scheduled to play Elverado next Monday at Vienna, at 4:45 p.m. The freshman team will host Carmi next Thursday (Sept. 27) at 4:45 p.m.
