Jean D. Wright, 80, of rural Simpson, died Monday morning, June 25, 2012, at 10:37 a.m. at Carrier Mills Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Jean was born on Dec. 21, 1931, in Johnson County, the son of Earl and Claris Kerley Wright.
Jean married Juanita Rose Smiley on Dec. 9, 1954, in Vienna. She preceded him in death on April 10, 2003.
Survivors include his children, Jackie D. and Nancy Wright of St. Croix, Ind., Zena and Jerry Wells of Simpson, Sally and Steve Smith of the New Columbia community and Donna Tindle and her son Dylan Rushing of Murphysboro; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty and Wayne Speck of the Brownfield community; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many dear friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, Jean was preceded in death by three brothers, Hal, Bill and Dewey “Buster” Wright.
Jean was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran from 1952 until 1954 and served in the Korean War. He was discharged with the rank of corporal.
Jean was employed as the foreman over the horticultural department for the University of Illinois Agricultural Center near Dixon Springs for several years prior to his retirement.
Jean was a member of the Glendale United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening, horseback riding and knife collecting. Jean loved spending time with his family and telling stories. He was an avid checker player and taught all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren to play.
Funeral services were held Friday morning, June 29, at 11 a.m. at Glendale United Methodist Church. Pastor Delbert Pancake and the Rev. David Wright officiated.
Burial was in Glendale Cemetery. Military flag presentation was accorded by members of the Illinois National Guard burial honors detail.
