Goreville Lady Cats shut out Mulberry Grove 14-0

May 28 vs. Mulberry Grove – SIU Super-Sectional
Goreville’s Lady Blackcats softball team defeated Mulberry Grove 14-0 Monday to win the SIU Class 1A super-sectional and advance to the school’s first ever state softball tournament. The victory pushed Goreville’s season record to 33-4. The Lady Cats are set to play Milledgeville in the state semi-finals on Friday at noon, at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria. The third place game will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m., with the championship contest starting at 12:00 noon.

On Monday, Sydnee Rushing went the distance in the circle, striking out 10 and allowing one hit. The Goreville offense was just as good, as the Lady Cats collected 19 hits for the game. Taylor Odom hit two home runs to set the IHSA state season record for round-trippers at 22, with two games left to play.

Goreville took control early, as the Lady Cats had a 6-0 lead after three innings. They added one run in the fourth before ending the game with seven runs in the sixth inning.

Top hitters for Goreville: Darnell 2-5; Miller 4-5 (2 RBIs); Odom 3-4 (2 HR’s, 3 RBIs); Pritchett 3-4 (2 RBIs); Shadowens 1-4 (RBI); Schaede 1-3 (RBI); Al. Webb 3-4 (3 RBIs); Ash. Webb 1-4 (RBI).

Winning pitcher Sydnee Rushing, Goreville. Losing pitcher Megan Blankenship, Mulberry Grove. Rushing struck out 10 and retired 18 straight after giving up a leadoff single. Leading hitters for Goreville were Shelbey Miller (4-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 triples), Taylor Odom (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 3 R, 2 HR),Alison Webb (3-for-4, 3 RBI, triple), Brittney Ptritchett (3-for-4, 2 RBI, double). Kayla Zimmerman recorded the lone hit for Mulberry Grove.

May 23 vs. Marissa-Coulterville
Goreville defeated Marissa-Coulterville last Wednesday by the score of 2-0, to move on to Saturday’s sectional championship contest. Sydnee Rushing pitched the entire game for the win, allowing just three hits.

The Lady Cats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a single by Alison Webb that scored Ashlee Webb, who had led off the frame with a triple. Goreville made it 2-0 when Ashlee Webb hit another triple in the third inning, to drive in the final run of the game.

The Lady Blackcats had a total of eight hits and no errors.

Top hitters for Goreville: Rushing 3-3; Al. Webb 1-3 (RBI); Ash. Webb 2-3 (2 triples, RBI).

May 26 vs. Galatia – Thompsonville Sectional Championship

The softball Lady Blackcats advanced to their second consecutive super-sectional by defeating Galatia-Thompsonville, 10-0, in the Cobden Class 1A sectional championship game last Saturday. Sydnee Rushing pitched the complete game shut-out, striking out 12, and improving her record to 20-4.

Goreville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Taylor Odom hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Shelbey Miller. The Lady Cats scored one run in the second inning and another in the third, then put the game away with five runs in the fourth inning. Alison Webb drew a walk, McKenzi Schaede doubled to right-center, then Rushing followed with an RBI single to right. Goreville scored twice more before a double by Brittney Pritchett plated two more runs, pushing the Lady Cats’ lead to 8-0. Goreville tallied two more runs in the sixth inning to end the game early.

The Lady Blackcats had 14 hits and committed one error.
