Nadene H. Slack

Nadene H. Slack, age 94 years, a resident of rural Grantsburg, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, April 14, 2018, at 9:42 AM at her home.

Nadene was born July 26, 1923 at Grantsburg. She was the daughter of John William and Violet May (Estes) Howell.

In November 1944, Nadene was united in marriage to John Warder Slack.

Nadene is survived by: her children – Cara Lynn (her husband, Phil) Webb of Tunnel Hill and John William Slack of Grantsburg; 2 grandchildren – Don (his wife, Cindy) Webb of LaVerkin, Utah and Megan Elizabeth Webb (her husband, Gary) Bouhl of Marion; and a great granddaughter – Shannon Webb of LaVerkin, Utah. Nadene also cherished her beloved dogs Aussie, Bouncer and Jett.

Nadene was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Nadene was a graduate of the Vienna High School. Following her graduation, she was employed by the school to work as an office assistant. Later, she worked at the First National Bank as well as working as a verifier at the Grand Theater both in Vienna. Following her marriage to Mr. Slack, she worked at the Grantsburg Grocery. Later, she was employed by Knupp’s Department Store in Vienna and later by P.N. Hirsch & Company where she worked as the assistant manager for 18 years and the store manager for 4 years prior to her retirement.

Nadene was a member of the Daniel Chapman Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) as well as being a member of the N.R.A. and the Johnson County Republican Women’s Club. She was a faithful member of the Fellowship Baptist Church where she taught a mixed adult Sunday School class for many years.

Nadene enjoyed a variety of pastimes. She was a voracious reader and maintained an impressive personal library. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and was widely known for her skills as a seamstress. Nadene was a writer and particularly enjoyed writing poetry. She is also remembered for authoring a history of her memories growing up in the Wartrace Community in Johnson County. This was a writing project which she undertook for the D.A.R.

A graveside service honoring the life of Nadene Howell Slack will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, April 18, 2018, at 1 PM at Wartrace-Howell Cemetery, 250 Reevesville Road, Grantsburg, Illinois.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 11 AM – 12:30 PM Wednesday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.

Memorials may be made to the Wartrace-Howell Cemetery fund and may be left in the care of Bailey Funeral Home or mailed to the funeral home at P.O. Box 695, Vienna, IL 62995.
