High school basketball season gets underway with ‘Meet The Eagles’

By Ryan Wright

On Nov. 11, Vienna High School hosted their annual “Meet The Eagles.” This event showcased what’s in store for the winter sports, including the boys and girls basketball team, as well as the cheerleading and dance team.

With many fans and students in attendance, everyone was announced one by one and to show are gratitude toward all the seniors, they were called out individually for the final sport they were playing this year. The cheerleading team performed in front of everyone to get things going, showing great team spirit and giving off positive vibes.

The girls JV and Varsity team followed them, giving a sneak peek at what the year will look like for the Lady Eagles by scrimmaging for a set time. With only two seniors for the girls team this year, Maddie Penrod and Lindsey Holhubner, the Lady Eagles will look to get a lot of help from the underclassmen this year, but look like they will have a successful year with the help of head coach Jamie Kerley.

The Lady Eagles will play their first few games of the year in the Marion Tournament, which will begin Nov. 13 and conclude Nov. 17. After playing against Herrin on Monday and Massac County on Tuesday, the Lady Eagles will face Gallatin County on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Marion on Friday at 7:30 p.m.; all games being played at Marion High School.

The dance team went next, showcasing their individual skills with a rehearsed performance, doing an excellent job representing Vienna High School.

The final team to finish the night off was the boys JV and Varsity basketball team. The Eagles look like they will have a big year with the help from their six seniors, Ben Daine, Nolan Dahncke, Dilynn Roper, Jakob Breeden, Chris Sharp, and Trenton Hyde.

With the Eagles already having lots of size going for them, as well as great coaching from Head Coach, Cory Waters and Assistant Coach, Brian Waters, they will defiently be a threat to many teams this year.

We will get to see just how well the Eagles will do this year with their season opener being on Monday, Nov. 20 at home vs Century at 8:30 p.m. in the annual Vienna Classic Tourney. They will also play on Tuesday against Galatia, Wednesday vs Cobden, Friday vs Carrier Mills, and Saturday vs Eldorado all games starting at 8:30 p.m.

Make sure to come out and support your Eagles!
