V-G football season comes to an end

By Ryan Wright

The Vienna-Goreville football team took on Carmi White County Saturday, Oct. 21, in their final game of the season at home in a conference matchup.

The Eagles’ record being 4-4 before this game, they needed the win to clinch a berth for the playoffs. However, Carmi White County was also in the run for the playoffs so both teams were fighting for the final spot.

With tensions high Carmi White County was able to jump ahead early in the game scoring 16 points in the first quarter totally destroying the Eagles defense and hopes early.

The Eagles were finally able to regroup in the second quarter when senior Nolan Dahncke scored two consecutive touchdowns, one being an 85-yard fumble return. Even though the Eagles did not complete the two-point conversion plays, they trimmed the score down 24-12.

The third quarter presumed with Carmi White County holding the Eagles scoreless the whole quarter, while adding yet another touchdown to their score to add to the lead 30-12.

The Eagles still had fight left in them though as sophomore Aidan Kuhn scored a touchdown along with a two-point conversion to narrow the lead 30-20.

But Carmi White County was too much as they held onto the ball for a six plus minute drive, scoring a touchdown as well to seal the game. They won over the Eagles with a final score of 34-20, securing a playoff spot and knocking out the Eagles only chance to extend their season.

The Eagles had a tremendous season compared to the previous year, ending their season record at 4-5.

With a successful year in the books the Eagles will look to come back next year and have an even greater season.
