Beggs-Gurley VFW, Auxiliary announce 2018 scholarships

Beggs-Gurley VFW and Auxiliary are taking submissions from students in Johnson and Massac Counties for the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy Contests along with the VFW Auxiliary’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest.

Patriot’s Pen is an essay contest for students in grades 6 – 8 including home schooled students with the theme of “America’s Gift to My Generation.”

There are winners on the Post/Auxiliary level, District and State with the National organization’s first place of $5,000.

Last year the Carroll P. Foster VFW Post No. 3455 in Anna sponsored a young lady who won at the Post, District and State levels and on the National level was awarded $4,000 for her second place entry.

Voice of Democracy is also an essay contest for high school students including home schooled students with the theme of “Our Hope for the Future.”

Along with being the winner on the Post/Auxiliary level, they can go on to District, State and possibly a National award with first place being a $30,000 scholarship.

The VFW Auxiliary’s Young American Patriotic Art Contest is for high school students including home schooled students.

This contest is a way for those artistically creative students to express their patriotic feelings.

The Auxiliary, District and State organizations award prize money with our National organization’s first place being $10,000.

All entries competing at the Post level for Patriot’s Pen and the Voice of Democracy must be in the hands of Beggs-Gurley VFW Post by midnight Oct. 31.

All entries competing for the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest must be in the hands of Beggs-Gurley VFW Auxiliary by Feb. 15, 2018. It is the responsibility of the student to meet these deadlines.
