Illa Mae (Hughes) Wieneke, 98, of Metropolis, IL, formerly of the Reevesville community, passed away on February 26, 2017, at 4:05 p.m. at the Metropolis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Illa was born on June 15, 1918, in Fordsville (now Energy) Illinois. She married Albert Wieneke on April 17, 1937, and they made their home in Reevesville until they moved to a nearby farm in the Benton community the following year. While living there, they were blessed with two sons.
They lived on the farm for over 27 years before returning back to the Reevesville community. She loved her God and family dearly and was a member of the Benton Community Church and later the Reevesville Community Church. She taught Sunday School at Benton for many years.
Illa was a homemaker, devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She enjoyed gardening, having pretty flowers, canning, making quilts, sewing, and visiting with family and friends. She loved history and had an excellent memory for events, names, and dates. She was the one the family always turned to when they needed to know family history, etc., and everyone was always amazed at how quick she could respond with the correct answer.
For the past seven years, Illa was a resident of the Twin Oaks Independent Living Facility in Metropolis, IL.
She is survived by one brother, Lee Roy Hughes of Jerseyville, IL; one sister-in-law Edna (Wieneke) Ozment of Marion, IL; several nieces and nephews: Vickie (Hughes) Barger and husband Jack of Tunnel Hill, IL, Jinney (Hughes) Watkins of Almore, AL, Sandra (Ozment) Johnson and husband Bob of Marion, IL, Phyllis (Ozment) Gulati and husband Diljit of Treasure Island, FL, Linda (Richey) Strandberg and husband Steve of Demotte, IN, Steve Richey of Demotte IN, Lindell (Bud) Richey of Palatine, IL, Frances (Wieneke) Mittendorf and husband Dale of Metropolis, IL, Sharon (Wieneke) Hepburn and husband Larry of Jonesboro, IL, and Theresa (Wieneke) Bass of Paducah, KY, plus several great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Wieneke; both sons, Ronald and Larry Lee; her parents, Samuel and Ava Mae (Boner) Hughes; two brothers, Raymond and Everett Hughes and wife Edna; one brother-in-law, Ernest Wieneke and wife Frances, one sister-in-law Amy Louetta (Wieneke) Richey and husband Clark, one brother-in-law Howard Ozment, and one niece Deborah (Ozment) Voyt.
She will be missed dearly, but we know she was ready to meet her God and her loved ones.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, 2017, at Reevesville Cemetery with Brother Steve Watkins officiating. Those attending the service are asked to gather at the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. There will be no public visitation.

A celebration of her life will be held at the Reevesville Community Church in their fellowship building following the graveside services.
