Fred “Bud” Funk, Jr., age 69 years, a resident of rural Tunnel Hill, passed away Tuesday evening, November 22, 2016, at 7:40 p.m. near Tunnel Hill the result of an automobile accident.
Fred was born July 21, 1947. He was the son of Freddie F. Funk, Sr. and Evelyn M. (Simmons) Funk.
Fred is survived by: his children – Donald S. Funk of Simpson and Andrea Miller of Carterville; 2 granddaughters – Alexandra Funk and Zoe Miller; a great granddaughter – Nora Jean Rawson; a sister – Toni (her husband, Lyman) Taylor of Creal Springs; 2 brothers – Barry E. (his wife, Patty) Funk of Vienna and David R. Funk of Marion; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by a nephew – Brad Funk.
Fred was a U.S. Army veteran. He was stationed for a period of time in Germany and served as a combat engineer prior to his honorable discharge.
Fred earned an Associate Degree from the University of Illinois and had received additional training to become a state certified civil engineer. Fred was employed for 33 years by the Illinois Department of Transportation prior to his retirement in 2001.
Fred enjoyed gardening, farming and raising cattle. He was of the Christian faith.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Tuesday evening, November 29, 2016, from 5 – 8 p.m. at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
A private service with military honors will be conducted at the New Salem Cemetery near Tunnel Hill.
