Athletes give sneak preview during ‘Meet the Eagles’

By Ryan Wright

Vienna High School hosted their annual “Meet The Eagles” event on Saturday, Nov. 12 with a big crowd attending. The event got off to a great start by introduction of all the winter sports teams in a blacked out gymnasium and with a projected light shining just on the teams and players as they ran out one by one.

To show appreciation to all the senior players playing their last winter sport this year, they were introduced separately. Along with each group introduced, there was also a special group called “Future Eagles,” consisting of kids who attended the basketball and cheerleading camps held by the VHS boys basketball team and cheerleading team.

The cheerleading team performed enthusiastically by getting the whole crowd involved to stand up and cheer the chant “Go Eagles Go.” Following was a very well choreographed routine by the dance team displaying a lot of great expectation for the upcoming year.

Afterwards, scrimmages by both the boys and girls JV and varsity basketball teams took place. Each game highlighted a different player, substituting different athletes in and out of the game to showcase every one of the athlete’s abilities. It should be an exciting year for the girls and boys basketball teams.

The Lady Eagles showed lots of potential for this year’s season and will be representing VHS in this week’s Marion Invitational Tournament, which will begin November 14th and conclude on the 19th. After playing Herrin on Monday and Marion on Tuesday, the Eagles will compete against Carterville on Thursday and Massac on Friday with both games starting at 5:30 p.m.

The Eagles will play their final game on Saturday ending the tourney against Gallatin County at 11 a.m. The boys season will fire up on Monday, Nov. 21, where they are set to play Cobden at 8:30 p.m., in the annual Vienna Classic Tournament, which they host. Vienna will compete on Tuesday vs. Century at 8:30 p.m.; Wednesday vs. Carrier Mills at 8:30 p.m.; Friday vs. Galatia at 8:30 p.m.; Saturday vs. Eldorado at 8:30 p.m.

Make sure to mark your calendars for these games, the boys team is looking to have a tremendous season. Come out and support your Eagles!
