On Monday, March 7, the Vienna High School Scholar Bowl team traveled to Pope County High School to compete in the IHSA Scholastic Bowl Regional Championship taking first place.
Prior to regionals, Vienna finished its regular season with a record of 9-2, placing the team as the number one seed.
The students who competed on Monday included seniors Ryan Bradley, Sara Childress, Blaise Davis, Ricky Hartig, Shawna Oliver and captain Miranda Brookshier.
At regionals, Vienna beat Cairo High School and Century High School to advance to the final match against Gallatin County. The matches that evening had been close for Vienna, keeping all of the senior members on their toes, yet Vienna led the scoreboard throughout the entire match against Gallatin County, finishing with a score of 110-80.
This is the first time for Mr. John Giffin where Vienna has had a scholar bowl team win regionals and advance to sectionals. VHS dean of students and thirteen-year Scholar Bowl sponsor Mr. Giffin commented on the victory by saying, “I’m excited we’re going to sectionals. We have a great group of very intelligent students who have led the team throughout the entire year. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
The team will compete in sectionals on Saturday, March 12, at Chester High School.
