Shirley Dalton, age 77 years, a resident of rural Tunnel Hill, passed away unexpectedly Friday afternoon, March 4, 2016, at 1:55 PM at the Harrisburg Medical Center.
Shirley was born June 14, 1938 in the Parker City community in Johnson County Illinois. She was the daughter of Roy Albert Moore and Beulah Faye (Taylor) Moore.
On December 31, 1955, Shirley was united in marriage to Oakley “Bud” Dalton, Jr. in Vienna, Illinois. He preceded her in death on July 26, 2013.
Survivors include: their children – Vickie (John) Craig of Vienna, Pat (Ted) Wilson of Karnak, and Billy (Toby) Dalton of Tunnel Hill; 8 grandchildren – Stephanie (Mike) Davis, Jason (Samantha) Johnson, Jodie (Chad) Douglas, Brandon (Ashly) Dalton, Brian (Morgan Carter) Dalton, Breanna (Kav) Kerley, Brittany Barkley, and Braeden Dalton; 20 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; 2 brothers – Donald Moore of Dixon and Joe Bennie Moore of Vienna; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by: a grandson – Darren Johnson, 3 brothers – Lawrence Taylor, Vernon Moore, and Cecil Moore as well as 2 infant brothers – Roy Leon Moore and Jackie David Moore.
Shirley was a 1955 graduate of Vienna High School. She had worked for many years as a cook at the former Tunnel Hill School. She also was employed as a seamstress by Allen Industries in Herrin and more recently was employed in the bakery department of Sam’s IGA in Vienna.
Shirley was devoted to her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She was a member of the Heartland Mule Rider’s Association and spent many happy hours trail riding with family and friends. Shirley also enjoyed camping. She was an avid Scrabble player and enjoyed Bocce Ball as well as Yahtzee. Shirley also made handcrafted crochet items and was a gifted & talented string instrument musician.
A private family memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
